Tone Concepts for Recorder
During the start of quarantine (March 2020), I began to revisit a dear old friend... the Recorder! The virtuosic and colorful nature of the instrument immediately inspired me to write for it. The Recorder is accessible to musicians of all ages and ability levels. I wanted to compose a set of fun, intriguing, diverse, and welcoming songs for musicians striving for an intermediate/young professional level to entirely professional playing ability. The set comprises 50 songs, ranging from 3 Recorders to 9. The Recorders used throughout the work are the Sopranino, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Basset (Bass) recorders. The Tone Concepts sounds terrific on both plastic and wooden recorders! All are welcome to play them!
The goal of the music is to allow the musician(s) complete choice in which pieces they play. They do not have to be played consecutively. A group of musicians may desire to play, i.e., 43,17,21, and 5. Each piece presents a different concept in color and tone, as described in the title. The rest is up to both listeners and musicians alike. Please feel free to explore the pieces below and on my YouTube page.
In 2022, the National Youth Recorder Orchestra of Great Britain premiered three of the fifty pieces in the U.K. The ensemble selected Tone Concepts 10, 13, and 40, which were absolutely fabulous!
(Tone Concepts will be available for purchase in late 2024! More information coming soon!)
